How Much Generator do I need?

If you're wondering "how big of a generator do I need?" what you really want to know is how much generator power a.k.a. total wattage you need. The wattage or power your generator needs to produce will depend on the quantity and type of items or equipment you want to run. Before you can calculate your needs, you need to understand what starting wattage, running wattage and surge wattage are.

Your running wattage is the amount of electricity you need to keep the device running. As the name implies, your starting wattage is the amount of electricity you need to start the device. On average, the amount of power you need to start a device is usually three times the amount you need to keep it running. Surge wattage is the most power you can get from your generator. Now that you understand how wattage works, you can figure out how to choose the best generator size for your needs.

You'll need to add up how many kW you'll need based on the devices you want to run on generator power. We've provided a helpful list of household electronics and their industry average running wattage. If your device contains a motor, you'll need to calculate the total wattage of that device using the following formula:

Running Wattage (R) + Starting Wattage (R x 3) = Total Wattage

Please note, the power requirements in this list are general examples and should not be used to calculate specific requirements. Refer to the user manuals that came with your appliances and tools for manufacturer-provided power requirements.

Putting It All Together - How Much Generator You Need

Once you've got all the running watts from all of your devices, in a separate column calculate the starting wattage by multiplying the running wattage of each device by 3. Once you've done this sum up all the running and starting wattage in their respective columns. Add the running wattage sum and the starting wattage sum to get your total wattage. Next you're going to take both your running wattage sum and the total wattage and divide by 1000. This will provide you with the amount of kilowatts or kW of which Generac labels their generators.

Now it's time to select your generator, you're going to need a generator with a kilowatt (kW) that is larger than your total wattage in kilowatts (kW). You'll also need to make sure it's running kilo wattage is larger than your running kilo wattage sum.
